Shop Safely Online: What Everyone Needs to Know

Online shopping has become part of our daily routine. Whether it’s everyday essentials, last-minute gifts, or big purchases, nearly 95% of Americans shop online at least once a year—and many of us do it several times a week.

But with convenience comes risk.

In 2023 alone, the U.S. experienced a record number of data breaches, impacting more than 353 million people. The FBI received over 880,000 cybercrime reports amounting to $12.5 billion in losses, and the FTC collected more than five million consumer reports.

Cyber scams are increasing—and they’re becoming more convincing. That’s why staying safe online has never been more important.

Before you click “Checkout,” here are smart ways to protect yourself:

1. Use unique usernames and passwords

Avoid using the same login information across multiple websites.
One hacked password can open the door to your entire digital world.

Password managers can securely store and generate complex passwords—and many include two-factor authentication for extra protection.

2. Never share your Social Security number

Legitimate online retailers will never ask for your SSN to complete a purchase.
If a site requests it, that’s a clear sign to leave immediately.

3. Don’t click promotional email links

A “50% off!” email might look real… until it isn’t.

Scammers often recreate emails and websites that look identical to trusted brands.
Type the retailer’s website directly into your browser to ensure you’re on the real site.

4. Avoid shopping on public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi is convenient but risky. Since it’s usually not encrypted, hackers can intercept your data or create fake networks to trick you into connecting.

Stick to secure, private networks—especially when entering credit card information.

5. Be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true

If a price is unbelievably low or a giveaway sounds overly generous, it’s probably a scam.

Think:
• Major discounts that don’t match the retailer’s website
• “Like our page for a free smartphone!”
• Offers that create urgency or pressure you to act fast

6. Use a virtual credit card number

Many credit card companies offer single-use or virtual card numbers that mask your real card information during online purchases. These still post normally on your statement, but protect your primary account.

7. Monitor your credit card statements

Check your transactions regularly, and set alerts for purchases over a certain amount.
Small, frequent fraudulent charges often go unnoticed longer than one large purchase.

8. Talk with your insurance agent about cyber protection

A cyber coverage endorsement added to your homeowners or renters policy can help you restore your identity, repair financial damage, and recover from fraud or cyber theft. It’s an affordable layer of protection many families benefit from.

9. Research retailers before buying

If you’ve never heard of the store, take a moment to search reviews. A quick look can save you from a costly mistake.

A Real-Life Reminder: It Can Happen to Anyone

Our Managing Director, Alice, shared her own experience after falling victim to a scam:

“I always thought that I was too smart to fall for one of these scams, but they got me. They had cloned my bank’s phone number so that it’s what showed on my caller ID. They carried themselves professionally and the conversation was what I would have expected from someone from my local bank. They were able to confirm my specific information—not just my name and address, but they knew my birthdate and my Social Security number. It is terrifying just how much they knew about me and how easy they were able to convince me that they were there to ‘help.’”

Scammers are sophisticated, persistent, and skilled at gaining your trust. Staying proactive is the best defense.
