What Is Final Expense Insurance and How Does It Work?
Thinking about what happens after you pass away isn’t exactly anyone’s favorite topic. But for many families, planning ahead can help prevent an already difficult time from becoming financially stressful, too.
One option you may have heard about is final expense insurance. But what exactly is it, how does it work, and who might need it?
Let’s break it down.

What Is Final Expense Insurance?
Final expense insurance is a type of life insurance designed to provide a death benefit that can help your loved ones pay expenses after you pass away.
It’s typically a permanent life insurance policy with a smaller death benefit than traditional life insurance policies. As long as the policy remains in force according to its terms, the coverage is generally designed to last for the insured person’s lifetime.
Although it’s called “final expense” insurance, the benefit isn’t necessarily limited to funeral costs.
Depending on the policy and circumstances, beneficiaries may use the proceeds for expenses such as:
- Funeral and burial or cremation costs
- Medical bills
- Credit card balances or other debts
- Household expenses
- Legal or estate-related expenses
- Other financial needs after a loved one’s death
The goal is simple: leave money behind so your family doesn’t have to shoulder those expenses alone.
How Does Final Expense Insurance Work?
Final expense insurance works similarly to other types of life insurance.
You purchase a policy and pay a premium to the insurance company. You also name one or more beneficiaries. When you pass away, the beneficiary can submit a claim to the insurance company.
If the claim is covered under the terms of the policy, the insurer pays the policy’s death benefit to the beneficiary.
For example, if someone has a $20,000 final expense policy, their beneficiary could receive a $20,000 death benefit. That money could then help with funeral costs and other financial obligations.
Policy terms, exclusions, waiting periods, and benefit structures can vary, so it’s important to understand exactly what you’re purchasing.
How Is Final Expense Insurance Different From Regular Life Insurance?
Final expense insurance is life insurance. “Final expense” generally describes how the policy is designed and marketed rather than an entirely separate category of insurance.
One of the biggest differences is typically the amount of coverage.
Someone purchasing traditional term or permanent life insurance might need a much larger death benefit to replace income, pay off a mortgage, fund children’s future expenses, or provide long-term financial support for a spouse.
Final expense coverage is generally purchased in smaller amounts because its primary purpose is to help with expenses surrounding a person’s death.
It may also have a simpler application or underwriting process than some traditional life insurance policies, depending on the product.

Do You Need a Medical Exam for Final Expense Insurance?
Not always.
Some final expense policies offer simplified underwriting, which may allow you to apply without completing a traditional medical exam. Instead, you may be asked questions about your health and medical history.
Other policies may have different eligibility requirements or offer guaranteed-issue coverage. Guaranteed-issue policies can have higher premiums or graded benefits/waiting periods, so it’s important to understand the details before choosing one.
“No medical exam” also doesn’t necessarily mean “no health questions.”
How Much Final Expense Insurance Do I Need?
There isn’t one amount that’s right for everyone.
Start by thinking about the expenses your family could face if you passed away. Consider funeral arrangements, outstanding debts, medical expenses, and any other bills you’d prefer not to leave behind.
Then consider the resources already available to your family.
For example, you may already have savings or another life insurance policy that could cover some or all of those expenses. In that case, additional final expense coverage may not be necessary—or you may only need a smaller policy.
Is Final Expense Insurance Worth It?
This is another common question, and the answer depends on your financial situation.
Final expense insurance may be worth considering if you:
- Don’t currently have enough life insurance to cover end-of-life expenses
- Don’t want family members paying funeral expenses out of pocket
- Have limited savings set aside for these costs
- Want permanent coverage with a relatively modest death benefit
- Have found that other types of life insurance don’t fit your needs
However, final expense insurance isn’t automatically the best option for everyone.
If you need substantial coverage to replace income, pay off a mortgage, or financially support dependents, another type of life insurance may be a better fit.
Can I Buy Final Expense Insurance for My Parents?
Potentially, but there are important rules.
You generally can’t secretly purchase life insurance on another person. The insured person typically needs to participate in and consent to the application, and the purchaser generally must have an insurable interest as required by applicable law and the insurer.
If you’re concerned about how your family would pay for a parent’s funeral or other expenses, an insurance professional can help you explore the available options.
What Happens If You Don’t Have Money Set Aside for a Funeral?
Without life insurance or sufficient savings, funeral and other final expenses may fall to surviving family members.
That’s one of the primary reasons people consider final expense insurance. Instead of leaving loved ones to figure out how to pay those bills during an already emotional time, you can put a financial resource in place ahead of time.

Final Expense Insurance Can Be Part of a Bigger Plan
Final expense insurance isn’t about leaving behind a fortune. It’s about planning for expenses you know will eventually exist.
The more important question isn’t necessarily “Do I need final expense insurance?”
It’s:
“If I passed away, would my family have the money they need to handle my final expenses without creating a financial burden?”
If the answer is no—or you’re simply not sure—it may be worth reviewing your life insurance options with an independent insurance agent.
Holley Insurance can help you compare final expense insurance with other types of life insurance and determine which approach makes the most sense for your needs, budget, and family.
